Don’t Shoot The Messenger: A Guide to Facing Mercury
Zoe Wilson
I have been studying astrology for almost 2 years! I’m new but my passion is wide and deep. I’m a creative with very intense dreams and I hope that through creation I can share my world with others.
Maybe it isn't so bad...
If the Super Wolf Blood Moon Eclipse wasn’t a big enough bang to start off 2019, we all got to experience the wonders of Mercury retrograde this early Pisces season! Often times, people see Mercury retrograde as this rigid, unforgiving transition which will tear our lives apart one bad text at a time. We are given this very negative response when Mercury retrograde comes up, but I’d like to shed some light on what Mercury retrograde can really do to enhance our daily lives and how we communicate with each other!Mercury: The Ruler of Communication
Let’s start off by looking at the planet Mercury. This planet actually got its name from the Roman God, while it’s Greek counterpart is named Hermes. Hermes was the messenger of the God’s which is fitting since Mercury is the ruler of communication. Mercury/Hermes was also seen as the God of eloquence, commerce and trade; communication and casual, or business, relationships, all requiring interpersonal skills. So when we look at the planet Mercury and what it means in our chart, it shows us how we communicate with others and how we put together the world in our mind. How do you process our environment and then share your understanding with others? Mercury is also about speech patterns and some would say it can tell us what kind of voice you have, but any takes on how astrology affects our physical being is simply opinion in this post.
Mercury in Retrograde
Now, when Mercury goes into retrograde, we are experiencing the opposite effects of what naturally happens. When a planet is retrograde it simply means that due to the transition of the planet, it can appear to be moving backwards in orbit, thus the retrograde. So it’s important to note that Mercury in Water Signs can lead to more emotional, drawn-out thinking. A Mercury in Pisces may be very quiet or prone to being misunderstood in conversation as they can tend to lose track of their thoughts. Of course, Mercury in Pisces is just as good a placement as any but it just highlights the more creative and peaceful communicator versus the passionate and blunt communication of say, a Fire Sign.
With all of this focus on the mind, and how we think and communicate, it’s easy to see that Mercury is most comfortable when placed in Air Signs. Quick-thinking Gemini or favorable Aquarius (yes, it’s an air sign), all benefit from the power of Mercury. But Mercury retrograde can be the great equalizer between all signs. With Mercury Retrograde in Pisces we are all pushed to be more sensitive and artistic in how we express ourselves to others. Perhaps you may feel the urge to turn your sorrow into songs or spend an evening creating to calm your mind. The key takeaway during Mercury retrograde in Pisces is to realize that not everything needs your words.
Messy Communication or a Rude Awakening?
Often we think we can avoid miscommunication by learning to communicate better, and while that can be true, it is also important to note that silence can speak volumes. Pisces is intuitive and often associated with the Third Eye and higher powers; when we enter Pisces season we are encouraged to embrace the conversation that goes on within...Mercury retrograde is no different. Perhaps you suffered from poor communication because you tried to create conversation and drama when you should have just stayed in your lane. Maybe you did a lot of talking and missed something important or simply just filled up empty spaces with your voice. It’s ok to be quiet, my love. In the silence you can hear your spirit guides whispering to you, leading you to a better you.
Old Habits Die Hard
Mercury Retrograde is also about diving deep within ourselves and rewriting old habits. If you’ve been forcing something or trying to avoid a disaster through passiveness, it will all come crumbling down during Mercury retrograde. Honest communication is the only way to develop ourselves and how we share are ideas with others; if we can’t be honest about our own thoughts then we can’t be ready to have honest, strong communication or relationships. Mercury retrograde is almost a mini-rewind in our stellar year, to see where we could make adjustments. If there is something that needs changing in order for you to move forward then Mercury retrograde is the time for it to come to light.
Spring Cleaning with Aries
Pisces can be a bit of a fibber, but they do strive for true inner strength and understanding. They wish to constantly elevate their state of mind and explore their dreams regularly, so when thrown into retrograde it can feel like a slap back into reality. With the heavy Pisces energy in the planets this time of year, we are all feeling like we wish to spend our days floating on clouds, but the work must be done! Mercury is delivering it’s message from the Gods and it reads “Get your head out of the clouds and start growing your roots!”
It’s even more fitting that this Mercury retrograde drops us off in Aries season. Aries is the first of the zodiac and as such, Aries is the sign that puts it all into motion. It is the perfect time to take all of the dreams and new insights you’ve gained from the retrograde, and put them into action. Perhaps some deep-rooted issues have come to light, then Aries season is the time to start uprooting all that doesn’t serve you. Go into your inner garden and do a spring cleaning; dig deep and rediscover the person you always were. Mercury retrograde allows us to unveil and magnify some of the unfavorable aspects of our personality but it is never to shame us. It is never to be harsh or cruel in fashion, so maybe don’t shoot the messenger next time, yea?
