A couple of years ago I was going through a pretty devastating break up. Even though I knew that the relationship wasn’t healthy and should end, the weight of ending something that took up my entire heart space was heavy and difficult to say the least. My entire life felt disrupted as lives do during times of emotional turmoil. I felt broken hearted and hollow as I went through my daily routine of work pretending to be okay because I had to continue to function.
During this strange time, I started to have very lucid and abstract dreams. In one dream in particular, I was flying through space and making stops along the way to talk to family members who I wanted to convince to join me on my journey to . . . I’m not sure where. I started to have precognitive dreams where events or conversations I had dreamt about would happen a couple of days later. Then I started to have lower back pain that would feel quite sharp and intense and go away as abruptly as it came. I didn’t know what was happening with me until someone told me that during times of great distress, or a dark night of the soul, your kundalini awakening can be triggered and that I might be going through it. This opened my curiosity about the Kundalini and the more I learned the more I was intrigued.
Kundalini is a Sanskrit term originating from ancient India that refers to an incredibly powerful storehouse of psychic energy often symbolized by a coiled snake at the base of the spine. In most people, this energy remains dormant until something causes it to awaken. Once awakened, the snake uncoils and ascends upwards through the 6 chakras, eventually making its way to the 7th chakra, the Crown, at the top of the head which triggers an awakening of consciousness and a transcendent spiritual state.
This energy may awaken in response to life events or spiritual practices. It may move gradually, uncoiling like a snake and peacefully rising to the Crown Chakra. In other cases, it may erupt explosively, making its way into the gut, the heart, or the head. This awakening can be startling, chaotic, blissful, or frightening. Perhaps you even feel all of those emotions at once. Once it starts, it usually triggers months to years of new sensations and changes.
This spiritual movement can be found in many traditions worldwide and the concept of intensifying energy in the body has been explored for thousands of years. It is a natural human potential that we encourage you to explore.
5 Signs Your Kundalini Energy Is Rising
This phenomena can be intimidating or frightening, especially if you are unfamiliar with the energy that’s causing it. Understanding is important, otherwise you open yourself up to unfamiliar territory that can result in a loss of interest in your old life or identity or you may travel into states of consciousness that may seem empty or disorientating. Pay close attention to your mind, body, and soul and what they are trying to communicate to you.
1. Your life just isn’t working
This is a time of confronting your past and your emotions. Current events and past events are rushing through your mind at a rapid pace. Your find yourself sifting through these experiences, analyzing their significance, feeling the emotion of the memory and experiencing a sense of loss or mourn over these memories and how you no longer can experience them. You feel like you are going through a crisis, and that everything in your life is up for review and questioning. This is a time to release these thoughts that you never felt at peace with.
2. A need to make sudden, radical changes
Whether this is a new diet, a new job, a change of wardrobe or a change in the people you spend time with, you are experiencing an overwhelming urge to change different facets of your life. More than anything, you realize what isn’t working for you in your life at this time and feel the need to change it.
3. Physical, emotional & energetic shifts
A kundalini awakening can trigger a wide range of physical, emotional, and spiritual phenomena which can feel both positive and negative. Physically, it can cause stress in vulnerable areas of the body and cause unfamiliar sensations such as shaking, vibrating, visions, and the inability to relax. Emotionally it can open your heart and mind up to shifts in perspective, but can also leave you feeling anxious, lost and empty.
4. Heightened intuition and awareness
You feel an overwhelming sense of empathy. It feels as though you can sense exactly what a person is experiencing the moment they face it themselves. This is an indication that your third eye is opening, and therefore your sense of intuition is strong and your sense of connectedness is in tune. You grow more attuned with your inner energy, feelings and thoughts, and become sensitized to those around you. This awareness leads to a growing relationship with your soul, and you begin acting as your own healer by understanding what you need in the moment and learning the skills you need to take care of yourself.
5. Sense of purpose and destiny
You become hyper-aware that your mind has been the sole force holding you back from presence and maybe even happiness. Mind has prevented you from the current moment, where your energy holds its most power. This realization sparks the idea that life is not happening to you, but instead, has simply been a reflection of you! You come to understand that what you are putting into the universe is exactly what you are receiving back.
Kundalini is here to remind you that sometimes what may appear to be a life crisis is actually a special spiritual awakening that is happening at just the right moment in your life. Be patient, good things are to come.
